"american grindhouse"...coming awfully soon

I wouldn't say that I'm moving on from grindhouse in any way, shape or form, but I just watched A Decade Under the Influence last week and I think I'm getting tired of the greasy old octogenarians with their chest-beating and their talk about being"honest" and "of principle... not like these schmucks today with their internet and their camcorders". I think I'm finally sick of hearing about how Jerry Gross was somehow cut from a different cloth than, say, Michael Bay.

What's sad is that I'm still gonna seek out this documentary and watch it. But, after that, please...no more grindhouse documentaries. It's distracting me from watching my art films. I've been trying to finish Belladonna of Sadness for about a week now, when shit like this comes up and I gotta post it.

podcast | episode two: "kiss me deadly (no ID)"

You remember the last post to this blog, from like a month ago?...the one that said "new podcast tomorrow?" Well, let's just build a story around that, so I don't have to come off as the lazy sonuvabitch that I actually am: The title of that last post was based on the "Free Beer Tomorrow" signs you see in bars. Oh, you've never seen one? Well, go to more bars. Or try not to drink so much that you go crosseyed and can't read all the neat signs in bars.

Furthermore, if you're ever in beautiful north Seattle, visit the fabulous Baranof. "Hear angel trumpets and devil trombones!...you are invited!"

Anyway, on to the podcast: No ID's in-between songs ('cuz I basically didn't feel like it this time). As for the playlist, well...I did this podcast a month ago, so you'd have to make me dig up song names with all kinds of weird spellings for artists like Barry Adamson, Serge Gainsbourg, White Zombie, Peeping Tom, Gene Pitney, Jill Tracy, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Francois Du Roubaix, Nine Inch Nails, Betty Davis and Tom Waits and on and on and on...but, ya see, I'm really not in the mood for that. I mean, I love you guys and I appreciate your support, but I'm not coming to your house to fuckin' spoon with you on the couch.

So be a grown-up, pour yourself another shot and be thankful for "Episode Two: Kiss Me Deadly (No ID)".

The radio ad this time is from 1969's Females for Hire, some sleazy German sexploitation fare.

Anyway, I'll try harder next time...I promise. :-)

I don't promise. :-)

sports | roller derby report

Next Monday, the Rat City Rollergirls start selling tickets for their 2010 season, starting on January 31st. If you're in the Seattle area and you like to drink and yell, think about putting that on your calendar.

Furthermore: the latest scores from Derby News Network. That's right--I said "Derby News Network"...what're ya, slow?

a man and his mad, mad book

Understand, before you even read this: This is the Book. It has no rivals.

A few months back, the mailperson dropped this huge box from Amazon on my doorstep (as if I needed MORE physical weight to contend with--the book inside really IS as heavy as advertised). Thanked the mailperson from across the street, because I KNEW what was inside that box--my copy of Stephen Thrower's Nightmare USA: The Untold Story of the Exploitation Independents.

Opened it up and just could NOT understand how one man could construct and compile a volume of reviews, essays and interviews so probing, so thorough, so down-to-the-last-microfiber that any other attempt before it (save, perhaps, old educational favorites like Sleazoid Express) just blows away in the wind. Thrower keeps it real in his commentaries on each film--if something's a piece of garbage, he'll tell you, flat-out. He doesn't mind cracking a joke, but he also works hard to insure that you're thoroughly educated.

If glowing accolades from "Bizarre" magazine, reviewers and critics everywhere and even the late Lux Interior himself don't sell you on this, then I don't know what to say to you. I really don't.

You will FALL INTO THIS BOOK...you'll try to spend Thanksgiving in it. Your friends/family/lovers may have to occasionally pull you OUT of it. It's just that good, just that complete. Don't leave it just lying around in public areas--SERIOUSLY. It will vanish.

And with a second volume on deck for next year, I mean...how can you lose?

You'll find part one of a recent interview with the author, Stephen Thrower, here.
